Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect from a therapy session?

Therapy is individualized and each person’s experience is different. In general, therapy (or counseling) is about identifying what is distressing, painful, and bothersome in a person’s life and focusing on relieving that distress. This happens within the therapy sessions in which you have support from a caring and skilled professional counselor or therapist. Often the therapy process involves self-reflection, self-compassion, exploring emotions, and trying out new or different thoughts or actions. Honestly, therapy is HARD! It’s uncomfortable and can feel intense at times. Naturally, humans avoid discomfort. So you may be thinking, Why would I ever do something I KNOW will be uncomfortable? And the answer is because what you are experiencing now is also uncomfortable and it’s not where you want to be. You want to experience relief from painful memories or you want to enjoy life again, or you may want to just feel like you can make it through the day. Something has brought you to explore therapy. Something has prompted you to consider counseling and that something will continue to weigh on you. You have the ability to feel relief and to find resilience. It won’t be smooth but it will be worth it.

What insurance does Unbreakable YOU Counseling and Wellness accept?

We currently accept Aetna, Regence, Blue Cross of Idaho, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and private pay. We are also able to provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for out-of-network benefits. If you have questions about using your insurance benefits, contact us!

I have a teen who needs counseling. What ages do you see?

We offer counseling services for youth and adults starting at age 13. Sessions are tailored to the needs of the individual. We take time to get to know you and your interests. Therapy can be intimidating, especially for teens. Therefore, we take time to understand the teens we work with and make sessions engaging and relevant to them. It’s a judgment-free zone.

As a parent, how involved will I be in my child’s therapy?

You are concerned about your teen, you want to know what’s going on with them but they won’t talk to you. They might be open to counseling but you aren’t sure if you’ll get any information and you still want to be involved in your child’s life. Rest assured that when your child receives counseling with us, WE want you involved. As a parent, you are therapy’s most valuable tool. You care for your child every day, seeing them, supporting them, driving them to a friend’s house. You are a big influence in their lives and we want to utilize that to help them grow.

Parents will be involved in the initial session to help the therapist get a full picture of what is going on. They will also be collaboratively involved in treatment planning and goal-setting. Then, ideally, you as a parent will have regular communication with both your child and the therapist regarding how you can support your child outside of the session, how you can learn techniques and tools your child may learn in session to support them in practicing and using their new skills, and communicate to the therapist what improvements or concerns you are seeing at home. Parents will not be physically present during the sessions unless requested by the client for a particular purpose. Typically, parents spend a few minutes to check in prior to the session or at the end of the session. If you’d like more time with the therapist, you can request a shortened (30 min.) parent support session.

Do you offer family or couples therapy?

Currently, we do not offer family therapy only nor do we offer couples therapy. We do offer individual therapy for teens and adults. We also offer Attachment-Based Parent Support for parents of children of any age who want support in their role as a parent. These sessions focus on the adult parent(s) and may include incorporating other family members to practice a particular skill but will not be focused on the relationships or dynamics within the family. In addition, therapy with minors will have a level of parental involvement and communication depending on the teen’s age and needs.
